Lyrics

I have a hobo's heart and I make my bed out on the road. I wear these travelling shoes, I walk with you inside where I can colour you blue. The road is long and wide when I get that feeling I might stay, it calls me away....

Lyrics

So, ask me again why I know you've been drinking. I'll answer you straight if I can: your eyes tell lies and you dont even notice you're buckled, you're bent out of shape. I love you like Avalon, misty and distant, ideal and indecent and wholly immersed, pour me a strong one, I will tell you a tall one: my dreams and my high hopes, my homecoming ways.

Story

This song won The Edinburgh Folk Club Annual Songwriting Competition in 2011. It's about having children and them growing up through potentially tricky teenage years.

Lyrics

Held in grace, wrapped in love, darling pal of mine, growing fast, you are ready to run, the world waits for you. Sometimes it comes on slow, I know you think there's no one holding you. But it's so hard to watch you make a rebel stance, lay it down Annabelle, for all these years I've waited for this chance to tell you this Annabelle. I walk with you, you walk with me, my hand is in your heart, your hearts on your sleeve.

Story

This is about the Sheerwater ferry boat journey to the Isle of Eigg and the creatures that live under the sea.

Lyrics

I set sail on calm water, drawn by the promise of the sea. The storm blew out of nowhere, now it's raging. Lighthouse, shine a light for me, fife boat, search for me? Fisher King, rescue me, for I am lost upon the sea. The silkies sing, they call to me, they speak of a life underneath. All my life I feel I'm treading underwater, pulled by tides, rolled by the seas, tides and moons and winds, they pull me under. The restless moon she playes these games with me.

Lyrics

She's Fallen, no rescue, in newspaper headlines. Come morning, its waiting, its only half a lie. The winds of tell tale do blow: they leave you stormbound and oh so cold. He's fallen, there's rescue in newspaper headlines, they're watching, they're listening, for only half a lie. Same story goes around, same stories come around. The winds of tell tale do blow, they leave you stormbound and oh so cold and all the pieces that make your life a whole, laid out and washed up on these angry shores. These newspaper headlines.

Story

This is about the beautiful city of Edinburgh. The Lion and the Unicorn are statues that guard the entrance to the park that I live beside. The Lion and the Unicorn are also two people.

Lyrics

Eastern seaboard city calls me home, it's autum but the leaves have not yet fallen. I need to see the Lion and The Unicorn, hold them tight and sit out cold November. The city streets beneath my feet are achingly familiar and I have flown too far on wings unproven. The sea has cast a spell on me, held me like a lover. The Lion and the Unicorn: I am home. Anchors weigh me down and tie me up with tales of who I'm missing. I need to feel my feet on solid ground. I will sail again when I get through November.

Lyrics

Martha wont you come on home, the blooms on your roses are fading. Toms hearts turned to stone: he sits watching waiting, waiting watching, watching waiting, he's frozen. A Blueflint High Bright Morning, through the live long day, the endless nights of longing. Martha wont you come home soon, the shine on your silver is tarnishing. Your girl has almost grown, she sits scritching scratching, she's asking questions, there are no answers, she's scritchin scratchin, she's frozen. Blueflint High Bright Morning..... Martha you've been gone so long the weeds on your front path are raging. Martha are you made of stone? We sit scritching scratching, we have some questions, there are no answers, we're scritching scratchin, we sit here waiting, we are frozen.

Lyrics

I lay here with you, we both heard the news, our hearts refuse to bear, a friend no longer here. You hold on to me, I cant quite believe, grief rolls through in waves, a friend has gone away. A friend left us today.

Story

The Reckless Angels have re-worked this song which I originally recorded with the Nevernever Cowboys on Quiddity with drums, bass, voices, accordion and horns: 2002. This version has changed key and is stripped down to guitar, voices and viola.

Lyrics

Put it down Caroline, how come you are doing what you said you'd never do? Are you out of your mind? Your losing it all its true. Sitting by a lighted window and I'm waiting for you. Funny how long the moments seem to last. If you could: hear what they are saying then you wouldnt be there waiting for him to bring it to you. Caroline. Hold on.

Lyrics

You have painters hands, and a devil grin, two left feet, when you are dancing with me. My Leviathan. Your heart it is gold, big enough for two and you walk this world with your faith in me, my leviathan. Your eyes they are green and they are deeper than the sea, and you see through me when I am fooling with you. My leviathan. We are growing old as we grow through the years and the changes come, with the laughter and with the tears. My leviathan. You are a travelling man, but you always come home. I love you when you're gone and I love you to your bones. My leviathan.

Story

Kilmally Cemetry is near Fort William on the road to the Isles in the Western Highlands of Scotland. Josie is a 19th Century fictional character, her kids went of around the world and settled in Canada, Australia and America, leaving her behind.

Lyrics

Josie lays in Kilmally Cemetery, she died of a broken heart. The four winds of providence they blew her family far apart. The love she gave and the gifts she made, tools for their escape. Josie lays in Kilmally, in an unquiet grave. Atlantic swell took the boys away, they left such space to fill. Girls travelled further than she hoped they ever would. I am not from round here, you here us say, I come from Kilmally and its oh so far away. If I had the wings to fly, I would surely fly away. Back to Kilmally, visit Josies grave, and taste the western rain and oh that summer air, and I would lay down all my cares.

Lyrics

It's a beautiful day, winter take your hard face and turn away, melt the ice that's forming on my heart. If we could have it all our own way, what would we say. It's a beautiful day, spring brings rushing greens, unfolding promises and wild roving winds. It's a beautiful day, summers here, the days are long, wild nights and wild dawns. If we could have it all our own way.... It's a beautiful day, December brings those quiet nights of wondering: self reflective forward thinking.
